Valentine's Day Off...Required a LOT of Work!!

I took the day off from work today to spend with my wife while our two daughters were in school.  First thing we did was to attend the 10am showing of "The King's Speech" which was a fabulous movie - highly recommended.  We then grabbed a bite to eat at a nearby Thai restaurant where I had pre-arranged to have a dozen roses delivered to our table.  Then when we got home, I gave her a framed/matted 8"x10" picture of the faux magazine cover below I'd created at http://www.tryyourcover.com/.  I think she liked it - meaning the wife.

But a father's Valentine's Day efforts aren't exclusive to his spouse, IF he has a daughter(s) - I'm doubly blessed in that category.  So I had a dozen Fiesta Roses delivered to the house for each of the girls, which were waiting for them when they got home school. I ordered them at http://www.theultimaterose.com/. These flowers are INCREDIBLE!  I've never seen anything like them, each petal is a different color. They must feed the baby buds a series of differently dyed liquid fertilizers to get the effect. You'll see in the picture below that even the closed buds have color on the inner petals.

Needless to say the girls LOVED their roses - they were a huge hit as evidenced by the poor quality photo I snapped with my smart phone!

All in all it was a pretty great Valentine's Day, but I may have to take another vacation day to recoup from all the secrecy and logistics - being deceptive takes a lot of work.

  2. It was great day..and gladly, you and I had a nice relaxing day (despite the prep that went into it.)
The girls loved their roses as much as you had hoped!

  3. Tor, I read about how they color the roses, and you could actually do it at home if you wanted to. The florist splits the stem several times, and puts each end in dye, which travels up to the petals. Many single colored carnations are colored that way. I bet the little ladies would get a kick out of it!

  9. Once again, you guys put a smile on my face. Love the magazine. Your girls are blessed to have parents who raise them to be strong and capable, yet worthy of being spoiled at times. I feel bad for the guys that ever try and live up to their dad! :)
    Blessings, my friend.

  10. @Beeg, I'm so glad you posted a comment - the picture I selected for the faux magazine was one you took when you, Jim and the kiddos visited for the DC cherry blossom festival. We're looking forward to spending time with you all this summer - assuming the logistics get ironed out!

  11. I would buy that magazine in a minute. Nicely done on all fronts Tor. My wife once threw me a surprise party but the duplicitous nature of hiding it tore her up. I think I picked well too.
